Services in Cypress
Here in Cypress, we have to worry about keeping our homes cool and comfortable when it’s hot outside, especially during the summer. According to the Berkeley National Laboratory, 85% of a house’s heating or cooling is lost through the attic, and over 90% of homes are under-insulated. This means that the most important place to insulate and make sure your insulation is in its best shape is your attic. Insulation is rated in R-values, these ratings are assigned based on an insulation product’s restrictive heat flow, and ideal R-values are larger.
For example, older homes typically have an R-value of around 11, whereas newer homes have an R-value of 38 or higher. Having the proper kind and right amount of insulation that is the most efficient for your home is the best way to ensure your home can maintain a comfortable temperature. Due to the advancement in insulation products and installation procedures, doing your attic insulation can be tempting, but it takes very little for incorrectly installed insulation to cause poor air flow ultimately trapping the hot air in your home. Spray in or batt insulation
Our attic insulation Pearland technicians are knowledgeable and have experience with different insulation types and applications. The most common applications we utilize are Spray In Insulation and Batting Insulation. Spray In insulation is loose fill insulation fibers that are blown into the attic to the depth and density to provide the best R rating for the home. Spray In insulation is most commonly used in attics with irregular joist spacing or obstructions and adding a top layer to previously insulated attics. Loose fill insulation can settle over time causing it to need reapplication to keep the desired insulation rating. Alternatively, batting insulation is made of flexible material that is packaged in rolls and made to be a different size to fit perfectly between the joists in an attic and can be layered to get the desired R rating. Batting insulation is most commonly used in attics with standard joist spacing, or for attics that have not been insulated or have had their insulation removed. Unlike spray insulation, batting insulation initially expands and can become slightly more effective before needing more insulation.
Insulation Removal and Replacement
When we have a consultation appointment for free estimates, we commonly get asked “when do most people replace or add attic insulation?” Most insulation products degrade after about 15 years. If you are noticing issues with your heating or cooling system, have drafts, or see moldy or wet insulation, it may be time to add or replace your insulation. If you aren’t happy with your AC’s capabilities and have had your AC checked out but are still not satisfied, it may be time to consider some new insulation. If you haven’t had your AC checked yet, you can see more on our Air Conditioning page.
If you’ve noticed any wet spots or mildew smells in your attic while you were tackling some spring cleaning, you need to have this taken care of as soon as possible. If you can’t already see mold growing, you need to have the wet insulation replaced and the water prevented. If you do have mold, check out our mold remediation services.
